      who we are

The Waterbury Neighborhood Association is a neighborhood organization whose purpose is to enhance the quality of life in, maintain the aesthetic appearance of, and promote the historical nature and significance of the Waterbury community.

The Waterbury Neighborhood is a residential area of 1,100 households within the geographical boundaries of I-235 on the North, Polk Boulevard on the East, Grand Avenue on the South, 63rd Street on the West, and also includes the homes with Des Moines addresses nestled between 63rd Street and the natural boundary of Walnut Creek.

During the early days of Des Moines, the area we call "the Waterbury neighborhood" was still a woodland near the banks of Walnut Creek. In 1917, the Greenwood Investment Company, owned by F.C. Waterbury, bought most of the land in the area and had it platted for homes.

The Waterbury Neighborhood Association was formed in 1995 to build community among neighbors and provide an organization that would help residents of the area to work cooperatively on issues of interest and concern to residents. In 1996 the Waterbury Neighborhood Association became one of Des Moines' officially recognized neighborhood associations.
